Does Your Child Know How to Work?

At an appointment this summer, the doctor, being polite, asked my Emily what she was doing on her time off from school. She launched into a dissertation of sorts on her activities – a job at J Crew, some babysitting, two classes at the community college, etc, etc. The doctor, rather surprised at the list, looked at me and said, “How do you get her to do all that?” I must of looked rather baffled because I didn’t know what she meant. She clarified and it dawned on me that my daughter is hard working. I didn’t “get” her to do anything.

Does Your Child Need A Friend?

If only my child had one good friend… Ahhh, how many times I have thought this! A good friend, a really good friend – is worth their weight in gold—a childhood friend that is loyal in the face of peer pressure, like-minded in values, kind and thoughtful, and… I could go on and on. My oldest has that kind of friendship. It began in pre-k and has survived twenty years of peer-pressure, puberty, boyfriends, and separation in different colleges. At the other end of the spectrum, one of my children had only one good friend. Unfortunately, while the friendship did not end, they grew apart. When they were halfway through high school they took different paths. Most of the kids she knew took the same path as her friend. My daughter was busy, involved but relationally lonely. There may be times in your child’s life when your child needs a friend but friends are not an option. Your child may not be able to find a good friend or your child may find one that is not a wise or healthy choice. Don’t leave them to suffer through it. There are a few things you can do: Help Your …

Tweens Aim For Fame Above All Else

Because I work at iMOM, I read so much about the negative effects of media on children. Sometimes, parents don’t like what they read and choose to believe that TV, movies, music, and videos really don’t impact children as much as we think they do. But it does, according to what I read today.

Nothing Cuter: Boys in Football

Earlier this week Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman – great blog) posted that there was Nothing Cuter than a bunch of little boys in football uniforms. She had such precious pictures of her little boys. Sigh…my Marky was once that little. I couldn’t resist. Camera in hand (old, not a Nikon, and totally inadequate to take pictures from afar) I headed up to the practice field to capture my not so baby, baby. Yes, I am a Ree Drummond wanna be especially in the photography, cooking departments. She is giving away another camera today. I already entered. And I really need it so don’t compare my pictures to hers. Here is my little boy in his football uniform. There really is nothing cuter! Sigh…again. Of course, at this age he would be mortified to know that I am writing this. He is a defensive back for the best team in the state (my opinion, of course) – Plant Panthers. And I love him very much. Sigh…last one I promise.

Techy Tuesday: Skitch

Skitch is an App that is just picture clipilicious fun! They were recently bought by Evernote and that’s how I heard about it. The App is very easy to use. Not sure what all it can do but for now it is really helping me get past my uncreative memories guilt. I tried scrapbooking but I couldn’t keep up with it. With Skitch I can watch a movie with the fam while I work on pictures. No glue or mess, just me and my laptop. I can edit pictures and make comments on them. I can email them to family members or share them on facebook. I am sure Skitch does a lot more but I am a novice. If you have any tips for me fire away – I love it so far!

I’m A Whack A Mole Mama

Just picture me, mallet in hand, furiously whacking away at a myriad of problems that relentlessly pop up out of know where at a never ending pace – treats for Grant’s class, physical for football, tuition for UF, sorority bill for ADPi and Zeta, laundry, laundry, laundry, flat tire, sick dog, internet down, no milk, prescription refill, toothache, forgotten lunchbox – I am a whack a mole mama. And those little moles can give you nightmares. Have you ever woken with your heart racing because how in the world did you have the nerve to go to sleep anyway? There are days, and even weeks, when I can’t seem to master my moments. I just came out of one such three week sprint. It was a blitz but it is over. I used to think it was just me and that I should have been more organized. I know better, now. From the moment those little moles are born they bring with them the element of surprise – like spit up on your husband’s suit the morning of a board meeting, 102 fever the night before you go on vacation, splitting their chin open on Christmas day, and remembering at …
